CranioFacial Therapy and the Nervous System

Published on 21 September 2026 at 19:30

Our Nervous System is involved in so much more than we often realise.

It is constantly taking in information, responding to what is happening around us and helping the body adapt to changes in our environment.

When life is busy, demanding or stressful, it can sometimes feel difficult to properly switch off. You may know that you need to rest, but your body doesn't always seem to get the message.

This relationship between the Body, Mind and Nervous System is an important part of my approach at Bridge Therapies.

What does the Nervous System have to do with relaxation?

We move between different states throughout the day.

There are times when we need to be alert, focused and ready to respond. There are other times when the body needs to slow down, rest and recover.

Modern life doesn't always make that transition easy.

Work, family responsibilities, constant information, screens and the general pace of everyday life can leave very little space for stillness.

Sometimes the difficulty isn't knowing that we need rest. It's actually being able to settle enough to experience it.

Where does CranioSacral Therapy fit in?⁹

CranioSacral Therapy is a very gentle form of hands-on therapy.

Rather than using strong pressure or vigorous techniques, the treatment uses light touch, stillness and a quiet environment.

This can provide an opportunity to step away from external demands and pay attention to what is happening within your Body.

I don't try to force the Nervous System into a particular state.

Instead, my intention is to create the conditions for you to feel comfortable, supported and able to settle in your own time.

The importance of gentle touch

Touch can be a powerful part of how we experience safety, comfort and connection.

In CranioSacral Therapy, the touch is deliberately subtle.

There is no need to push through tension or make the body release anything before it is ready.

Sometimes less really can be more.

By slowing down and becoming more aware of the body, you may begin to notice sensations that usually go unnoticed when life is moving quickly.

You don't have to be "stressed" to benefit from quiet time

I think this is worth saying.

You don't have to consider yourself stressed or overwhelmed to want some time to pause.

You may simply have a busy life.

You may spend most of your time looking after other people, working, managing responsibilities or moving from one thing to the next.

CranioSacral Therapy can offer a dedicated period where there is nothing you need to organise, achieve or respond to.

You can simply lie down, receive the gentle treatment and allow yourself some space.

My nervous-system-informed approach

My work is influenced by my training as a CranioSacral Therapist and my wider study of the Mind-Body connection, alongside many years of hands-on bodywork.

I am interested in helping people understand that the Body and Mind aren't separate systems working independently of one another.

What we experience emotionally can influence how we feel physically, and how we feel physically can influence how we experience the world around us.

That doesn't mean everything has to be analysed or explained.

Sometimes, simply noticing and listening to the body is enough.
